Observer football memories

A REUNION of old football team mates brought back happy memories for ex- Observer staff.
John David Thorpe sent in these photographs when the former footballers and their wives gathered to reminisce about old times last month.
Mr Thorpe said: "The old football pictures came from Brian Westbrook.
Dick Hall, third from right, is the same man who acted as the Observer's goalkeeper in the late 1950s, early 1960s.
"We were all 1949 entrants to Uplands Technical, Archery Road, St Leonards, which came into being from The Bourne Technical College - long demolished. Uplands Technical, in that name, lasted only from 1945 to 1956 before it closed down.
"We were like a 'Dead Poets Society'. But the college survived attempts to demolish it as it came into the Burtons St Leonards preservation area.
"I have tried to find a photo of the college and failed, but I do have a single photo of a victorious football team 1946/47 taken at the Bourne.
"A lot of boys went to this college and many skilled people emerged as a result. "
